The Chiefs - Rock or Pop?

The Chiefs - Rock or Pop?
28th May - London Astoria 8.00 ish.

The night kicked off in a bit of a hurry as we excitedly rushed to the much loved Astoria, full of many lasting memories for us all I think.
As it happened we arrived in plenty of time, and within a couple of minutes the beers were in!!!! ( the most important part of a pre-gig build up.)
The first band arrived on stage shortly after. The unknown Leeds based Duels. However as with few supports we've seen over the years they did not disappoint. My description, a slick, energetic and most importantly sexy five piece including the cute Katherine (Keyboards), a cross between The Future Heads and The Kinks with a hint of The Killers.
With masses of true passion for their work, catchy lyrics "hold your hand up to the sky, hold your hand up and protect your eyes" mind bending tunes and a shit hot guitarists (Jim) they produced a grand start to the evening.
The Beat Up. The most hyped of the supports really were a let down. Boring. Dull and un-original. What more can I say, your average rock band with a distinct American style and predictability about them. Let down by the sound team a lack luster front man with quiet vocals failed too impress.
A long and unusually hot wait approached as the crowd eagerly anticipated The Chiefs. Preparing their advance to the stage silhouettes could be seen and Cries of Chiefs Chiefs rang out.
As The Kaiser Chiefs came on stage the crowd became a group of teenage girls, yelling and screaming and generally going wild. The Kaiser Chiefs had arrived.
As the first beats and strums of "Na Na Na Na Na" ( as predicted by Luke) came blaring out of the speakers the crowd started to liven up more than ever. The Chiefs kept the crowds energetic dancing displays up as they played the hits such as "I Predict A riot", "Oh My God" and "Everyday I love you less and less". The lyrics pounded through the Astoria as these songs got some of the biggest reactions out of the crowds. However all of the songs seemed to have the "oh so similar" effect of the audience of hyping them up. The Chiefs energy in their music and performance was infectious to the crowd and definitely kept fans energetic in the hot and sweaty pit as the front. Ricky jumped several times into the pit, everyone in the crowd desperate to touch, kiss and grope him! The high light of my evening seeing my brother holding his own at the front of 2000, Ricky dived in and landed right on top of him, Lukey scuffing up his hair and attempting kiss him a great sight and bodes well for the future of our indie rock revolution. The band went off for five minutes or so and came back on for their encore of two songs, which again revved the audience right up. As the set finally came to an end and the band threw all sorts into the pit, Ricky tempted the crowd with his famous public school boy-looking jacket, then gave a look "As if!"
Unfortunately for me I have to sum up The Kaiser Chiefs with the words of Charlotte, "oh so similar"- not their style but the they way every song sounded like the last and had a little too much of that "oh so similar" ring to them.

And my answer to the question "rock or pop"? POCK!. The Kaiser Chiefs. A truly entertaining pop band with great stage presence. Ricky knows how to work the crowd with his arrogant nature. Moderate rock attitude.
A highly entertaining night.
7/10

Personally I don't think the Chiefs look or sound very innovative, it's catchy yet boring which is why I don't think they'll last past a second album. Ricky's stage presence is great but the music does absolutely nothing for me.

always looking for the worst in everything, nothing good ever. become perfect at everything and then i think you have reason to criticise.
